Whenever I get faux locs people always ask me how I do it, how I maintain it, and if it is my real hair. Today I decided to answer all of your questions about my soft faux locs. I will go into detail about the hair I used, how I take care of them, and how I make them look so natural. If you are interested in learning more about how you can get these super long, beautiful, and natural-looking faux locs, then keep on reading chile!

HOW DID YOU DO YOUR FAUX LOCS AND WHAT HAIR DID YOU USE?

soft locs

I ALWAYS use “nu locs” by Bobbi Boss to do my faux locs. You can purchase the hair for $5.99 a pack at your local beauty supply store. If you want a cheaper bundle or would just rather shop online to get that RAKUTEN cashback, you can purchase the hair on Amazon (HERE). For this style, I used about 7-8 packs of hair because I extended the locs. If you choose not to extend your locs, then 3-4 packs of hair should be fine. I also used 2 packs of Kima spring twist” hair to wrap my locs. Spring twist hair is what gives you that “soft natural loc” look, so make sure you use spring twist hair to wrap your locs.

As far as how I actually did my faux locs, I just looked up “How to do faux locs” on Youtube and learned how to do them that way. If you want to do regular locs without wrapping it, you can watch this video HERE. I personally always use crochet hair and do the individual method when I do my locs because it looks more natural ( I do not do cornrows). Also, I thought I should let you know that I did not do this hair all by myself. My sisters helped me out ALOT (actually they did everything for me lol).

HOW DID YOU PREP YOUR HAIR FOR THIS STYLE?

To prep my hair, I followed my regular wash day routine (I will have a post out soon about my wash day routine so stay tuned 🙂 ) After I completed my routine, I then blow-dried my hair with a HEAT PROTECTANT (no one has time for damaged curls.). After that, I used Shine ‘n Jam at the base of my hair to do my individual box braids. This jam is amazing for locs, box braids, and even cornrows. This jam also doesn’t leave your scalp flaky or itchy.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR LOCS AND WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU USE?

(If you would like to see a video on how I do this, be sure to watch my YouTube video below :))

So because this is a protective style, I don’t have to do much to maintain it.  At night, I wrap my hair with a silk scarf and always sleep with a silk pillowcase just in case my scarf falls off ( I’m a rough sleeper y’all). I also use an oversized bonnet or a hair net. (I alternate between both depending on how I feel). Furthermore, I use 3 products that allow my protective styles to last longer without it looking crazy. These products are the Cantu Shea Butter Apple Cider Vinegar Root Rinse, The TGIN Green Tea Super Moist Leave-in Conditioner, and the Doo Gro Anti-itch Oil (I add my own peppermint oil to the doo gro oil for a soothing feeling and for scalp stimulation). These products together work wonders for my scalp. Notice I specifically said my scalp because that is what I focus on when I have a protective style. I usually do not worry about the rest of my hair because it should already be well moisturized and protected. Your scalp should be the only thing exposed during a protective style.

How I use these 3 products: So basically what I do is cut out a piece of an old t-shirt that I no longer wear (you can use a small face towel or microfiber towel if you want) and soak it with warm water. I then add the root rinse to the t-shirt (see pictures above) and lightly scrub all the dirt off of my scalp( It’s easier to do this when your hair is split into sections). After cleaning my scalp, I then mix in a little and when I say a little I mean less than a dime-size amount of leave-in conditioner with the doo gro oil onto the palm of my hands. I then use my index finger and rub a thin layer of this concoction onto my scalp. This is the best part because the peppermint oil gives my scalp a soothing feeling. After that, I leave my hair alone to breathe and go about my day. I do this every 1-2 weeks meaning I do this 2-4 times a month depending on how dirty and itchy my scalp is.

THE PROS AND CONS OF GETTING 32 INCH LOCS

Pros: They are so cute and EXTRA just like me, the older they get, the more natural they look, they are easy to achieve, they are easy to maintain, and they last a long time. This hair is also lightweight because it is crochet hair.

Cons: Sometimes the long hair gets in the way of things which can be annoying to some people (if you get them shorter, it should be fine). The hair also sticks to each other sometimes, but you can just rub your hands through your hair and it will go away. Furthermore, if you make your locs too full, it will be kind of heavy and uncomfortable. To avoid this, make sure the parts in the back of your head are not too small. I made this mistake and had to go back and fix it.

I hope you all found this post informative, and I hope you try some faux locs this spring and summer. Have a blessed week family!

Is it difficult taking the locs out?

    1. Joyce Chekwa

Hello Betina, I wouldn’t say it was difficult. It was time-consuming though because I didn’t want breakage. I took my time taking out each loc, and I cut it shorter to make it easier to remove. I hope this helps!

I LIKE!!! I might have to start with 12 inches and work my way up though! What is the longest time you’ve had them in for?

    1. Joyce Chekwa

Thank you soo much Annalisa! I do not think they have a 12 inch. The shortest they have is 14 inches (which I have worn and love as well). I usually keep them in for 6-8 weeks, and I sometimes redo the front if I need to. Let me know how you like them when you try it, sis!
